Burundi
B/L Print Requirements
Mandatory text on Ocean B/L
- • ECTN / BESC Number, 6-digit HS Code, and consignee 10-digit NIF mandatory on B/L.
- • Coastal discharge port must be stated with mandatory transit notation: "Cargo in transit to Burundi via [Dar es Salaam / Mombasa] at consignee's risk and expense".
- • Ocean freight must be prepaid.
ECTN number and consignee NIF must appear on the final B/L and manifest. The transit clause ("In transit to Burundi via [Dar es Salaam / Mombasa]") must appear in the goods description field.
Inspection & Certificates
Pre-loading inspection & filing
- • ECTN must be validated via OBR-appointed authorized agents prior to vessel departure.
- • Mandatory Certificate of Conformity issued by BBN-accredited inspection bodies prior to shipment for regulated commodities.
- • EAC Single Customs Territory electronic transit bond processed at coastal gateway port.
Cargo & Standards
Labeling, vehicles & packaging
- • Passenger vehicles: maximum 10 years from manufacture
- • Right-hand-drive vehicles are strictly prohibited.
- • French or English product labeling mandatory on all consumer commodities.
- • Official Veterinary Health Certificate mandatory for all imported meat and poultry products.
- • Motor vehicles older than 10 years face elevated environmental levies.
- • ISPM 15 wood packaging compliance strictly enforced at border corridors.
- • ISPM 15 heat-treated stamp required on all wooden packaging.
Shipper & Consignee
Where this destination differs from standard practice
- • Foreign consignees are not accepted — a locally-registered entity must be named.
Consignee must be a registered Burundian legal entity with an active 10-digit NIF issued by OBR. "To Order" B/Ls are permitted provided the Notify Party is the registered local buyer or licensed transit broker with full physical address in Bujumbura, local phone number, and NIF stated on the B/L. PO Box only is rejected.
Non-Compliance Risk at Destination
Missing transit clause or ECTN halts corridor cross-border dispatch and RECTS electronic bond issuance at Dar es Salaam or Mombasa. Regulated goods arriving without a BBN CoC face destination border holds.
